History of Mills Family Farms

With Mills Family Farms You're in Good Company

What is today known as Mills Family Farms was established as Mills Distributing Company by Basil Mills in 1958. His brother Roger soon joined the business. From their first day in business the Mills family displayed the commitment to quality product and equitable business practices that are the hallmarks of the company today.

In the beginning, Mills was solely a brokerage, selling the bounty of produce grown by farmers in the fertile Salinas Valley of northern California. Over the years, land and shipping facilities were acquired so that in addition to buying produce grown by others, Mills could market its own brands of high quality vegetables. Packing, cooling and shipping services were added, and today, Mills Family Farms oversees its entire vegetable delivery process from planting the fields to stocking the shelves.

Much of the company’s success comes from the exemplary relationship it enjoys with its grower partners. This is testament to Mills Family Farms’ ethical business culture and its reputation for reliability. Mills’ first account was with Cel-A-Pack—marketing its cauliflower for more than 30 years. Mills continues to pack three of the produce industry’s oldest, most successful and respected brands: “Sassy,” “King O’ Hearts” and “Boss.”

But what truly sets Mills Family Farms apart is the experience and skills of its employees. Since its inception, the company has placed a high priority on the fair, nurturing treatment of those on the “front lines” and supports all employees in operating at their peak of performance.

Today, three generations of the Mills family work in the company. With some of the finest farm land in the world, state-of-the-art systems and equipment and a highly motivated and respected staff, Mills Family Farms is ideally positioned to serve the produce needs of consumers well into the future.
